Watchtower History

A Short Introduction of Church History

Like so many organizations that have left the original, God given plan for the True Church that Jesus founded-- rebellion is the key word.  As you will see shortly, this is not at all new.

The only true, Bible based Church, is found in the book of Acts, beginning with the second chapter.  This was a Church built upon nothing less than the human leadership Christ had put into position, and according to their obedience, the giving of The Holy Spirit's guidance, and the power to witness and operate according to the Divine will, through the Holy Spirit's  office.

In chapter six, we see that the original Apostles began to delegate authority and responsibilities to additional people,  in answering the need to expand and accommodate the growing numbers of converts to Christianity.

In chapter nine, we learn of the conversion of Saul, who becomes, through Divine authority, the Apostle Paul.  You can note that caution and scrutiny abounded before he was accepted by the original 11 and Matthias, who had, by the casting of lots, filled the position left by Judas Iscariot.  Only the testimony of  Barnabus, convinced them to accept him. In a sense then, we can say that Paul was the first "modern minister" to receive a Divine Call to the office, after the death and resurrection of Jesus.

We must also take into consideration, the Epistles of 1&2 Timothy, and Titus, to ascertain the qualifications  that the original church required, before an individual could obtain a position of responsibillity/authority within the church body.

We also know from the Corinthian Epistles (letters), that rebellion, false prophets and the like were a virtually immediate problem.  These situations have never ceased to exist in Church history: i.e. Catholic/Protestant, Conservative/Liberal and the rest of  the regalia of what we now know as "organized religions."

It is with this background in mind, that we must address the establishment of the denominations, sectarian views, etc., that we know encounter and deal with, including the multiplicity of cults that now exist.  It is interesting to note, that in some people's view, Christianity, by virtue of following the man Jesus, is cited as a cult.

Charles  Taze Russell

At the age of 25, Mr. Russell was the manager of  several retail stores for men's furnishings.  His Theological indoctrination prior to  that time was through the Congregationalist Church.  He arrogantly rejected and denounced organized religion as a result of his disagreement with those teachings, including eternal punishment.  He also organized the Dawn Bible Students and Men's Home Missionary Movement.  Here we can note his first hypocrisy.  If organizations are so bad, why did he himself then do exactly the same thing?

His second hypocrisy is that of self proclamation as a Pastor.  That is to say, he never, as do legitimate members of the clergy,  became ordained by, and answerable to any official governing body!  What he did do, is engage in a host of  questionable practices and outright lies, in order to establish his authority and power base.  Does this remind you of Lucifer's actions in Isaiah 14:12-14?

This then, is  a short synopsis of the founder of The Watchtower/Jehovah's Witness organization.  He was a rebellious, egotistical individual.  He was more a salesman than lover of God and His way, who surrounded himself with those who would champion his cause through like mindedness.   He utilized lies and confusion, to create a following of those who could be dissuaded and persuaded into believing that which is false.   Upon his demise, other such individuals took his place.  Now, masses of unsuspecting individuals fall prey to a lie.   You may care to read Romans 1.24 in this regard.

Subsequent Leaders

We cannot find, in examining those who carried the torch of this organization, any major change in Character and personality of  Watchtower/JW leadership.   Each leader who followed behind Russell, establishes himself as someone who is beyond accountability.  Enlarging the organization become tantamount to God hood.  To maintain and expand their position, even if lies must abound, is merely a part of the course of action necessary to achieve their goals.  They are not concerned about reasoning with others, or what the religions that has gone before them has taught.  False prophecy on their behalf does not exist.  They simply come up with some alternate explanation, and for that matter, accusation, against those who hold fast to Biblical truth.

The Rank and File Membership

The basic modus operendi of the rank and file membership also takes on these traits of arrogance and egotistical behavior.  Anyone who takes some time to deal with the people who knock on the doors, knows that there is an immediate air of wanting to "argue religion" rather than a loving, calm attitude.  This is the simple result of the indoctrination any person involved with a rebellious cult has received.  In other words, such people must defend themselves against an enemy, before anything else.  Lonely, rebellious, and frightened people can easily fall prey to anyone, who will at least show an interest in them.   So it has been, and so it shall continue to be.  I have often said that if the rank and file Christians would learn from these proselyters, the ranks of  Christianity would be greatly bolstered.

For an in-depth study of this cult and its history, I suggest that you obtain a copy of  "The Kingdom of the Cults," by Walter Martin.  His research and exposition are absolutely impeccable.
