Some things to consider when making a donation to an organization

Some things to consider when making donation...

1. Find out about the people and the ministry. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't give until you're satisfied with the answers to your questions. Ministries with nothing to hide will encourage your interest.

2. Determine whether the ministry or the need coincides with your giving plan.

3. Don't give impulsively. Look at your reasons for giving and make sure you are putting into practice the principles of "responsible giving."

4. Become an informed giver. Learn more about the ministry's programs, objectives and finances. Reassure yourself that you're dollars are being put to their intended use.

5. Give what you are able and have pre-determined to give. It doesn't matter whether your contribution is big or small. What counts most is that you are doing it for the right reasons and that you have exercised your responsibility as a donor.

6. Don't give cash and don't give your credit card number out over the phone.

7. Keep records of your donations so you can document your giving at tax time.

8 Be wary of names that sound familiar but aren't exactly the same as the ministry you are thinking of.

9. Always ask for written information if you're being solicited over the phone. This will allow you time to check that the phone or mail solicitation is from a real ministry or charity.
